Open Source at LSE
LSE supports employees who want to get involved in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
Beyond the business-driven Open Source projects we're doing, we can spend up to 25% of our work time on Open Source projects.
We find that free software often suits our needs much better than closed source software. We identify with the Open Source ideas and values, but are not dogmatic about it.
These are some of the practical reasons why LSE is involved in Open Source:
- Software quality
- Transparency
- Speed and cost efficiency of development
- High commercial utility for suppliers and users
- Protection of investments and reduced risk thanks to vendor independence
- Wide range of independent solution partners
- Advantages to the economy and society at large
We are convinced that due to these reasons, we as a company will profit from our investments in Open Source.
This is what we are doing:
- Share results of our work (Code, Patches, Documentation)
- Enable employees to initiate Open Source projects
- Propagate open standards
- Develop links with users and community
- Support OSS projects with our time and experience
One of our goals is to make Open Source usable in a medium and large enterprise context. "Open Source goes Business"
Open source at MAX21
LSE is part of the MAX21 group which supports young Open Source based businesses.
Among our collegues in MAX21 are e.g. Linup Front, a training company with strong involvement in LPI, Linux and Open Source training and certification and focus::voip, unified communication specialists who are building a PBX based on free software technologies and who are related to Asterisk e.V.
